Most of them required a fair bit of non-trivial computations and some reasonably comprehensive geographical data sets - neither of which might have been widely available before recent times. In particular, there is a free "Geographical Workbench" program (called Galileo) that can be used to perform many computations and illustrations similar to those that are presented here.
