Lesser Known Facts and Figures About the Planet We Live On

On these pages you will find a number of interesting facts about the Earth that might not have been commonly known or widely published. Most of them required a fair bit of non-trivial computations and some reasonably comprehensive geographical data sets - neither of which might have been widely available before recent times. The computations are based on a geographical software product known as the "Hipparchus Library" which you can learn more about by visiting the pages of Geodyssey Limited at http://www.geodyssey.com/. In particular, there is a free "Geographical Workbench" program (called Galileo) that can be used to perform many computations and illustrations similar to those that are presented here.

What exactly is the fraction of the Earth's surface covered by the oceans? Oceans

We all heard about a travelling salesman, but how about a travelling diplomat visiting all the world's capitals? Capitals

If we all (yes, the whole population of the Earth!) decide to meet, what would be the best place? Meetingplace

Do you have an interesting fact about the Earth that you've been wondering about but never found an answer? Can you correct any of the facts presented on these pages? Do you know of a data source that would make it possible to find the answer to an interesting question - or a better, more precise answer already presented here?
